Gunner Pool Recreation Area


Hiding out in the Ozarks is a gorgeous natural pool called Gunner Pool, and it has its very own recreation area complete with cool, clear creeks and absolutely gorgeous scenery. Gunner Pool Recreation Area was originally called Camp Hedges. From 1933 to 1942 this was a base camp for some 2,200 enrollees in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). From here they worked on many projects within the Sylamore National Forest. The Gunner Pool Recreation Area offers a campground stretching along the scenic North Sylamore Creek. Campsites are shady and private, but have no electrical or water hook-ups. This recreation area is located within the Sylamore Wildlife Management Area.

Gunner Creek flows over a small stone dam into North Sylamore Creek, adding an extra layer of scenic beauty for you to enjoy. You can see a lot of North Sylamore Creek as it flows through the Gunner Pool Recreation Area. The old bridge that spans North Sylamore Creek is incredibly picturesque.

Gunner Pool Recreation Area is truly a hidden gem of the Natural State, and there’s no time like the present to explore this gorgeous natural wonder with its clear creeks, blue pool, and intense natural beauty. There are fantastic opportunities for camping and hiking at Gunner Pool Recreation Area.
Visitors can access the Sylamore Hiking Trail via a trailhead located within the Gunner Pool campground. Blanchard Springs Caverns is located just minutes away from this recreation area. The White and Buffalo Rivers border the east and west sides of the district, where visitors can enjoy float fishing and canoeing. Camping- 27 campsites with grills, tables, lantern poles and tent pads. Access is by a steep, winding, dirt road, not recommended for large recreation vehicles. Beware while swimming or hiking, for there are a lot of native snakes in the area. It you do not mess with them they won't mess with you!

Water is turned off seasonally during the winter months. For current conditions and updates call Blanchard Springs Caverns at 870 757 2211. Gunner Pool is a great option for camping if Blanchard Springs Campground is closed due to inclement weather. Campground - $10/site/day year round. Day-use $3/day. Directions: From Mountain View take Arkansas 14 west for 14.2 miles then right on Forest Service Road 1102 (gravel) for 3 miles. Not recommended for large trailers or Recreation Vehicles (RVs)
